Commitment
to
Fair Trade fragrances
and
cosmetics
in the company
of industry colleagues! |
| |
Fair Trade,
although a source of perfumes and cosmetics, is in the
minds of some, subordinate to a much wider interest in
organic products. But Fair Trade is getting organized.
The challenge of producing the highest quality products
from socially responsible and environmentally sensitive
sources is immense. With this in mind, the major actors
in the field met at the Second
Fair Trade Perfumes & Cosmetics event held on October 6, 2011 at the Palais du Luxembourg
in Paris.
Industry representatives attending
had two major concerns. First, establishing a deeper
and more widely accepted commitment to the concept of
Fair Trade. And second, forging relationships with committed
partners and players. This was a forum where major cosmetics
brands were able to exchange views with specialist suppliers
and niche players about their experience and vision of
the future of Fair Trade. Cosmébio and Bio Partenaire
took part in the debates and shared insights into initiatives
in this field.
TF&You • What
were your impressions of the round table discussion?
(speakers from top to bottom, photos right):
Julie Stoll (Plateforme
Française du Commerce Équitable – PFCE
French Platform for Fair Trade): "The discovery
that players in perfumes and cosmetics were truly mobilized.
PFCE is of course ready to support all initiatives
along Fair Trade lines."
Patrick Collin (Golgemma):
"Our return on investment, both human and financial,
has benefited hugely from the contribution from producers
in Madagascar. For Golgemma, this is a virtuous circle
of continuing improvement, which encompasses the
dimensions of social, commercial and environmental
responsibility."
Maud Reboul (L’Occitane
en Provence): "By sharing our experience
at an event such as this, we hope to raise more interest
from other players, so that they can in their turn
work with the producers whom we support. We hope
the producers will then be less dependent on l'Occitane.
An occasion such as this is highly beneficial. "
Jérôme Vaquier (Ecocert):
"I welcome the fact that we can provide methodological
support as providers of certification and a quality
label, in the view of the enterprises that call upon
our services."
François-Patrick Sabater (Group
Technico Flor):
"Fair trade is generating real momentum, not
only within our company but among our customers and
suppliers.
The Fair Trade approach has encouraged more transparency
and is a huge incentive toward adopting more creative
approaches.
Our commitment to sustainable development
has become stronger and richer. Witness the fact
that all our products benefit today from Fair Trade
sourcing, that provides us with the highest quality
essential oils."

TECHNICO
FLOR IN THE USA,
STRONGER AND CLOSER TO NATURE!
New partnerships out to conquer the West.
Technico Flor has reached a new stage of its expansion
into the US market, by teaming up with Extracts & Ingredients,
a specialist in natural products whose mission is to promote our Natflor®, NatFair® and écolabel.
After taking part in the Edison Supplier’s day in May, Technico Flor was
involved in November with SCC California, in a market which is of outstanding
interest to companies working in natural cosmetics.
Our Technico Flor US branch, set up in Miami
in 1987, is constantly expanding in the traditional perfume fields, all the while
it is raising the profile of its natural product-focused approach.
Operating along the same lines as Technico Flor China in
its home market, Technico Flor US offers an outlet
to our European customers who seek bridgeheads in the US market, and want to
sell more perfumes of French provenance by setting up US-based production. We
provide our many customers with opportunities to substantially reduce their logistics
costs and make considerable time savings on deliveries to the North American
market.
TECHNICO
FLOR DO BRASIL
Brazil - The new promised land of fragrance
Technico Flor Brasil
was set up in São-Paulo
in September 2011, to develop top-of-the-range fragrances
for this high potential market. The Brazilian luxury goods
market accounts for 70% of the Latin American market in
premium products, and generated perfume/cosmetics revenues
of US$ 12.9 billion, at an annual growth rate averaging
10.5% over the last 13 years. Brazil is now the third largest
fragrance market in the world, and if it carries on could
soon be number one, ahead of the USA and Japan.
We at Technico Flor look
forward in the longer term, to setting up local production,
so that our compositions meet the desires and needs
of both our target customers in Brazil, and of our
incoming European clients, who wish to set up in this
exciting market.

MAP TO FAIR TRADING |

Sustainable
Development
and ISO 26000,
Christophe
Mangalte |
| |
TF&You • Sustainable
development established dedicated standards just
one year ago. What do those standards mean?
CM. ISO 26000 is an international framework
which gives a sense of direction to the corporate sector’s
sustainable development drive. The ISO approach is more
guidelines than a standard. There is no certification
as such, but assessment.
This takes place on four levels
including commitment, progression, maturity and exemplarity.
This special approach to assessment sums up the spirit
behind the standard, one of progression and responsibility.
TF&You • What
is ISO 26000 all about?
CM. The
standard is there to help companies respond to the
seven most challenging issues facing contemporary society.
These are respect for Human Rights, sound working conditions
and relationships, environmental protection, good business
practice, high consumer standards, and local social
development. The foundation of the whole approach is
good governance. The other original feature is that
the standard requires companies to consult with stakeholders,
namely staff, customers, suppliers, associations and
others beyond. Answers are sought to the central concern
of how to provide an approach which is innovative,
enriching and holds future promise.
TF&You • Does Fair Trade
have a role to play with respect to the standard and
more broadly in sustainable development?
CM. Fair trade is a valuable and relevant
response to a number of central issues!
Any company
committed to sustainable development necessarily requires
to reflect carefully about how it procures its goods
and what relationships it establishes with its suppliers.
Ingredients sourced from Fair Trade mean a responsible
purchasing policy is in place. Fair Trade is a real
contributor to sustainable development. This is all
the more important in the fragrance industry, which
sources a number of its raw ingredients from the more
disadvantaged economies.
TF&You • What progress
has Technico Flor made on these
issues?
CM. Fair Trade initiatives,
natural and ecolabel fragrance creations, Iso 14001 in
progress, all these initiatives are part of an organized
approach to sustainable development.
The natural next
step for Technico Flor was
to engage in Autumn 2011 in ISO 26000 process.
